That means less food for deciduous trees! Soon the tree's photosynthesis (food-making) "factory" will shut down and the tree will rest until spring when water and light again awaken the process. This process is called photosynthesis, which translated means "putting together with light." As winter nears, less sunlight and less water - elements essential to the process of photosynthesis - will be available to trees. It only shows up as the nights get cooler.įall is a great time of year for teaching about the process that gives life to trees. And that they do - in brilliant explosions of color!Īnother pigment (anthocyanin), which produces reds and purples, isn't present all year long in most green leaves. But, come fall, a tree's leaves produce less chlorophyll. It covers the yellow (xanthophyll) and orange (carotene) pigments that are natural to a tree's leaves. It's just that the pigment chlorophyll (the pigment that makes the leaves green) is a much stronger pigment than the others. You might ask your students why they think dentists refer to baby teeth as "deciduous teeth"? See if your students can figure out the connection!Īnd here's another question for your students: Did you know that a tree's leaves are orange and yellow - even in summer? Most leaves include the pigments of all three colors. Trees that drop their leaves each fall are called deciduous trees. And, in many parts of the United States, it means that trees will soon shed their leaves after a final colorful salute to summer. It's fall! That means shorter days and cooler nights. Most bundlers, Microbundle included, save processed styles to the disk as a CSS file. It's a zero-configuration bundler for tiny modules, powered by Rollup. I use Microbundle to build my open-source projects and love it a lot. With Yarn: yarn add react-code-box With npm: npm install react-code-box Usage You can override classes and styles on the CodeBox via its props style and className. In order to achieve our goals, we decided to find a simple way of injecting styles into the page just like how CSS-in-JS libraries do that. Installing an extra dependency on other developers' projects does not seem justified to us. Use this online react-css playground to view and fork react-css example apps and templates on CodeSandbox. Of course, there are tiny CSS-in-JS libraries like goober that cost about 1KB, but we didn't feel like we need the entire library since our styles are not dynamic. The entirety of react-colorful costs about 2 KB, but installing emotion would make the size of the package almost 7 times bigger. In my last post, I mentioned that react-colorful aims to be a zero-dependency package and we didn't want to change that by adding a CSS-in-JS framework, such as Emotion. □□ Why not just use an existing CSS-in-JS solution? The component is a hoc which can be used to overlap another component while exporting. Moreover, many component libraries and UI kits are CSS-in-JS exclusive, so the CSS-only approach makes it difficult for the picker to be compatible. As such, usage of react-colorful would necessitate the alteration of build configurations for these users to be able to access the default styling. The data is used to map the human-readable names you’ve used in the files to the globally-safe output CSS. The CSS output is normal, global CSS, which can be injected directly into the browser or concatenated together and written to a file for production use. It is quite common in the React ecosystem to use libraries like Emotion, Styled-Components, or other CSS-in-JS libraries exclusively and to entirely forgo the inclusion of a style loader. CSS Modules works by compiling individual CSS files into both CSS and data. It seemed like a good solution, but we've started receiving complaints from many developers that were unable to use the styles. In terms of bundle size, everything was super cool because we wrote all styles as CSS files that were then compressed and minified by a bundling tool. Gill then feels sorry for almost putting Nemo's life at risk because he was too excited from going back into the ocean. And when the filter starts up again, the Tank Gang had to pull Nemo out of the filter with a decorative plant to prevent him from being shredded alive. The next day, the Tank Gang make their first attempt to jam the filter, but the pebble is unfortunately not jammed hard enough. He tells Nemo that the only way for the fish to escape the tank is to have Nemo jam the aquarium filter's motor with a pebble (as he is the only fish that is small enough to enter and exit the said filter), causing the entire tank to be completely covered with algae, and therefore forcing the dentist to clean the entire tank, at which he puts all the fish into plastic bags, which the fish use to roll out an open window overlooking a street next to the harbor and allowing them to escape. Currently, the most famous actor to perform at Gaslight was Jack Wagner, who has starred on Days of Our Lives.ĭo not confuse the Gaslight Theatre with the Gaslight Music Hall. The walls are filled with photos of previous shows/actors who have performed over the years. The theatre is cozy and is decorated in a Western theme. As for the name Gaslight, it originated with the original gas lights that permitted shows in the evenings. Over the years the Gaslight Theatre has performed in various locations and settled in its present site, near the corner of Broadway and Kolb in 1990. They took their show to Alaska but returned to Tucson when winter arrived. The Gaslight Theatre started out as an idea in 1977, when Tony Terry Jr., a student at the University of Arizona, started his own theatre company with 17 members. In addition, once a month the restaurant sponsors a classic car show in the parking lot. This restaurant is adjacent to the theatre and is owned by the Gaslight Theatre. The food comes from Little Anthony's Diner, a '50s decorated restaurant, popular in the American Southwest. The menu is American comfort food including pizza, salads, hot wings, ice cream along with beer, wine, and sodas. There are 72 tables, sitting 215 patrons. The Gaslight is about the closest thing to dinner theatre as Tucson has. The actors even wander into the audience, making ad-libs comments and singing. The audience is encouraged to "boo" or "hiss" at the bad characters and "cheer" for the good characters. The humour could be described as tongue-in-cheek, slapstick, play-on-words and bad puns resulting in groans or guffaws. The Gaslight Theatre has a family-friendly atmosphere with simple storylines, clean jokes, and continuous audience participation. Some of the musicals produced are The Phantom of the Opera, Space Wars, The Lone Stranger, Back to the Past, the Three Musketeers and 007. The performing arts in Tucson, Arizona, is fortunate to have a number of excellent theatres, but it is the Gaslight Theatre that has a unique approach to draw an audience. That Castroneves could go on to become the redundant man at Team Penske after a two-decade affiliation should not have come as a shock. It was this happy-go-lucky boy from Brazil – not some kid from central Indiana or northern California or even Patrick, a phenomenon entirely onto herself – †who’d emerge as the face of American open-wheel racing after a 14-year civil war that threatened to sink the sport entirely. The last time I saw him in person, while tracking Fernando Alonso’s maiden Indy voyage in 2017, Castroneves was pogoing on the balls of his feet outside the drivers’ green room before the race after finishing 0.2 seconds behind Takuma Sato, he wasn’t too deflated, either. .I’ve seen him beat federal tax evasion on the way to winning a third Indy 500, watched him pivot from in-demand bachelor to the proud partner of longtime squeeze Adriana Henao and doting father to daughter Mikaella who, sheesh, is 11 now? All while he’d become a heartthrob to a nation of blue-haired Dancing with the Stars fans – not least, Danica Patrick’s own grandmother – who couldn’t get enough of his Mirrorball trophy-winning quickstep routine with Hough in the show’s 2007 finale. There were the churrasco feasts in New York’s Midtown, the predawn beach workouts, the backstage hangout on the Dancing with the Stars victory tour with Joey Lawrence and Julianne Hough – “Wow, Drew! Don’t go there,” Castroneves says, cutting me off. That’s me still incredulous about having this open book for an introduction to the motorsports beat when my Sports Illustrated editors shunted me there at 25.Ĭastroneves and I have had some good times. That’s not me making myself out to be some great access merchant. In almost 20 years writing for the toy department, I’m hard pressed to name another sports figure I’ve spent more time with than Castroneves. Never mind if the idea of anyone doubting one of the most successful drivers in American open-wheel racing at any age seemed more than a little off track.īut then again I’m totally biased. That he’s sitting here now at age 46, in his race-worn, magenta-accented Meyers Shank team fire suit, with a sparkling Indy 500 championship ring on his finger, is as much a testament to Castroneves’s undying perseverance as the “great group of people” in his corner who “make you believe in yourself”, he says. Which is to say Castroneves was written off by same blinkered logic that kills off most athletes after the age of 30 and buries most people post 40. The two have an easy chemistry, anchored by Holmes’ charming performance. It’s a set-up, of course, for June and Charlie to spend time together. When June arrives at the colonial-style Airbnb, she’s shocked to find the spare key missing and the lights on. A brief exchange with her driver, in which he tells her some version of “people always think they have more time,” captures the melancholic mood of those early days and telegraphs June’s forthcoming adventure. She masks her hurt and sends him an agreeable response. He’s worried about his parents and thinks it’s best to stay in the city. In the car, she gets a weirdly perfunctory text from her boyfriend saying that he won’t be able to meet her upstate as planned. The frazzled writer eventually gets to Grand Central, where an initially frosty station attendant informs her that service has been slashed and there won’t be another train for hours. A homeless person admonishes her for not giving him money - reminding her that the world is ending, and he shouldn’t have to ask her twice. New York is indeed as much a character in Alone Together as June, which makes it frustrating when that radiant opening leads into a series of contrived moments as our character tries to flee upstate.
